Do’s and Don’ts after Varicose Veins Treatment

Veins and arteries are responsible for circulating blood throughout the body. Varicose veins develop when the blood fills the veins more than enough so that they become enlarged. They are caused due to weak or damaged valves in the veins. Varicose veins are commonly observed in the leg. Veins of this type look like reddish or dark purple colour, and they can be seen easily because they appear as curly bumps on the skin.

In most cases, they don’t cause any discomfort. When the condition becomes severe, you will experience symptoms such as soreness, pain, and swelling. These symptoms can also lead to heaviness and extreme discomfort.

Fortunately, a variety of treatment options are available to manage the condition of varicose veins. After treatment one has to follow certain precautions and avoid doing certain things. Dr. Pradyumna Reddy, one of the best doctors for varicose veins treatment in Hyderabad outlined some of the do’s and don’ts after

Treatment for varicose veins

Surgical treatment is the main course of action for varicose veins if the symptoms are severe. In recent years, medical science has developed minimally invasive surgical techniques with the help of modern technology that doesn’t require large incisions. Sclerotherapy and EVLT are the popular treatments options used to treat this condition.

Sclerotherapy: It is an effective treatment for varicose veins that is painless and minimally invasive. A chemical solution is directly injected into the problematic vein and this solution tends to shrink the vein. As a result, the blood is diverted through other healthier veins. Eventually, the shrunken vein heals.

Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT): This treatment is extremely successful and has the highest success rate in treating varicose veins. The procedure involves the insertion of a catheter, and before that the surgeon performs a Duplex Ultrasound Scan to verify all your weak veins and determines where the catheter should be placed. After that, a local anaesthetic will be used to numb the area. An incision is made on the skin once the area has become numb so that the catheter and guidewire can pass through. This is then followed by passing an optical fibre through the catheter once it is positioned. With the help of laser energy, the affected veins can be sealed. It takes approximately an hour to complete the whole procedure and the entire process is painless.

After you have had your surgery, here are a few things you should do and not do following the surgery.

After sclerotherapy

At least for one week after the treatment, don’t do strenuous exercises and avoid lifting heavy objects. These kinds of activities can drain out sclerosing medication out of your veins, which makes the treatment less effective.

Do moderate exercises.

Standing or sitting for a long period of time is not recommended.

After the treatment, you should not soak the leg for at least two days.

After Endovenous Laser Treatment (EVLT)

After the EVLT procedure, you can go home on the same day with a bandage and compression stockings placed in the operated area by the vascular surgeon. Your surgeon will advise you to keep them on for one or two days after the procedure. A day after receiving the treatment, you can take a bath and remove the bandages.

After that, you should wear stockings during the daytime and can remove them at night.

Place one or two pillows under your feet while you are sleeping.

To prevent pain and the risk of infection, you may be suggested taking certain medications. It is very important to complete the course of medicines given by the doctor for a safe and faster recovery.

The next day after your surgery, you can resume your normal routine.

Don’t do long hour journeys for at least 2 to 4 weeks.

Do maintain a healthy diet rich in fruit and vegetables. Be active. If your job involves sitting at a desk for more time or driving a lot, then keep in mind to move frequently throughout the day. Get up from your seat and move around a bit every 20-30 minutes.
