Varicose veins are the enlarged and twisted veins that are most commonly seen in legs. However, they can appear in other parts of the body. They usually occur when the blood flow is blocked and hence veins get overfilled with blood. The treatment for varicose veins includes lifestyle changes, the use of compression stockings, and surgery.
If lifestyle changes or stockings do not help, then surgery is the only solution. If your varicose veins are small, they can be treated using sclerotherapy where chemical injections are used to destroy varicose veins. If the varicose veins are large, surgery will be performed that can provide a complete cure.
Endovenous Laser Treatment (ELVT) is the most commonly used laser treatment for varicose veins. This procedure uses a beam of laser light to burn the varicose veins instead of removing them.
What are the Benefits of Laser Treatment?
EVLT or laser treatment for varicose veins is less invasive and it offers the following benefits:
- The treatment time and discomfort are less
- Provides total relief from signs or symptoms
- You can return home on the same day of the procedure
- You can resume normal activities immediately
- Only small incisions will be used and no scars will be left
How to Prepare for ELVT?
When you decide on laser treatment, you should follow the instructions given by your doctor. You should inform your doctor about your medical history, medications you use, etc. Your doctor may suggest you stop using blood thinners and aspirin before undergoing the procedure. Inform your doctor if you are allergic to certain medications, tape, or anesthesia medicines.
You should wear comfortable and loose clothing and make sure to have someone with you to drive home after the procedure. You should also stop eating and drinking at least 8 hours before the procedure.
What Happens During the Procedure?
Endovenous Laser Treatment takes around 45 to 60 minutes and it is performed on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, you need to lie on the hospital bed. A numbing cream will be applied on the area to be treated to reduce the discomfort. A surgical drape will be used to cover the area once it is cleaned and sterilized. An ultrasound will be used to view your veins.
A small incision will be made on the site using a needle to insert a catheter and it is positioned towards the vein. The catheter contains laser heat to burn the varicose veins. Local anesthesia will be used to numb the area around the veins. The laser heat will discharge heat on the vein as the catheter is slowly drawn backwards. This closes the veins and the catheter will be removed.
After the procedure, the doctor will apply pressure into the inserted region to prevent bleeding. The opening in the skin will be covered using a bandage or elastic compression stockings.
What Happens After the Procedure?
After the procedure, you might be asked to walk for about 30 to 60 minutes. You may have some bruising on your legs and it will disappear within two weeks. You need to wear compression stockings to prevent bruising.
You can resume your normal activities after the treatment and you need to be active. You should use medications as prescribed by the doctor and avoid strenuous exercises and standing for long durations.
