What is Uterine Fibroid Embolisation (UFE)?

Uterine Fibroid Embolisation — also called Uterine Artery Embolisation (UAE) — is a minimally invasive interventional radiology procedure that treats uterine fibroids by cutting off their blood supply, causing them to shrink naturally over time.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in or around the uterus that affect millions of women. They can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, pelvic pain, pressure, bloating, and urinary symptoms.

Performed by Dr. Pradyumna Reddy, Interventional Radiologist in Hyderabad, UFE is done through a tiny puncture at the wrist or groin — with no major surgery and no uterus removal.

What UFE Treats

✔ Heavy menstrual bleeding
✔ Pelvic pain & pressure
✔ Frequent urination
✔ Fibroid-related anaemia
✔ Large or multiple fibroids
✔ Submucosal & intramural fibroids

How Uterine Fibroid Embolisation is Performed

1
Imaging Assessment

MRI or ultrasound is reviewed to assess fibroids and uterine blood supply.

2
Wrist or Groin Access

A tiny puncture is made without abdominal incision or stitches.

3
Microcatheter Navigation

Under live X-ray guidance, the catheter reaches the uterine arteries.

4
Embolic Microspheres

Microspheres block blood flow to fibroids while preserving healthy tissue.

5
Natural Shrinkage

Fibroids shrink progressively over 3–6 months with symptom relief.

Frequently Asked Questions — Uterine Fibroid Embolisation

Most women experience cramping and pelvic discomfort for 1–3 days after UFE — this is the normal post-embolisation response as the fibroids lose blood supply.

This is managed with appropriate pain medication during and after the procedure. The procedure itself is performed under sedation and local anaesthesia, so you will not feel the catheter being placed.

UFE may preserve fertility in many women, and pregnancies have been reported after the procedure.

However, UFE is generally recommended for women who have completed their families or where other treatments have failed.

If fertility preservation is a priority, this will be discussed in detail during your consultation, including whether myomectomy may be more appropriate for your specific case.

UFE treats all existing fibroids simultaneously by cutting off blood supply.

The treated fibroids are permanently destroyed and do not regenerate.

New fibroids can theoretically develop from untreated tissue, but the recurrence rate is significantly lower than with myomectomy.

Most women notice a significant reduction in menstrual bleeding within 1–3 menstrual cycles after UFE.

Full improvement in bleeding, pain, and bulk symptoms typically occurs over 3–6 months as the fibroids continue to shrink.

No abdominal scar whatsoever.

The only mark is a tiny puncture site at the wrist or groin — which heals within days and is cosmetically insignificant.

Most patients are discharged within 24 hours of the procedure.

Recovery at home typically takes 7–10 days before returning to normal activities.
